Torquay's vibrant town centre and iconic harbourside are known for their cool cosmopolitan vibe, suburban chic, and for the selection of bars, restaurants and ice cream parlours that are the bread and butter of any seaside resort. However, did you know that nestled just a 10-15 minute stroll away from the centre of Torquay lies one of the most beautiful villages in South Devon?

The pretty village of Cockington, rated in TripAdvisor's top 5 'Things to Do in Torquay', is a hidden gem, oozing with the character and charm that Devon's villages are renowned for. An ideal location for romantic strolls through the woodland and along the streams and lakes, for family picnics over the acres of Country Park land, or for friends catching up over a cream tea at Weavers Cottage Tea Shoppe, Cockington is a truly local slice of heaven for everyone, young and old. Loved and maintained by a team of lucky volunteers from the Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust, Cockington sits just a picturesque stroll from the seafront, and yet would seem to anyone else like another world entirely.

Quiet, charming and picturesque through each footstep, Cockington is a palace of the seasons, beautiful at every time of year. From the fun of days out with the family in the summer, enjoying a delicious local ice cream or kicking a ball, to the crunch of the leaves underfoot in the autumn, and even enjoying winter crafts in the renovated Cockington Manor which now runs craft workshops throughout the year, the beauty of Cockington is only matched by the fun that can be had by all, no matter when you choose to visit!

Of course, the beauty of such a place as this is not to be underestimated, for little is it known that Cockington is actually the most photographed village through the whole of Devon - and no wonder! With country trails through nature's arches of branches and foliage, there's a picture to be taken at every turn, capturing memories with loved ones that are sure to last.

More recently, there's an even greater choice of transport through and about the village too. If you don't fancy taking those long countryside strolls, then why not hop aboard on the horse and carriage rides - the perfect treat for the kids, or for a romantic ride with your special someone. Or if you want to go further afield and see the sites of Torquay, hop on the land train! A very reasonable fare will take you through Cockington and beyond, stopping on the seafront, in the town and at various other points of interest - a truly unique way to explore the Bay!

All in all, it's true to say that Cockington is a real hidden gem, and a complete contrast to both the coastline and the town's urban centre - a real must for stays in Torbay!
