Summerville in Lynmouth, North Devon, is one of our favourite properties. It looks out onto the East Lyn river which happily burbles away on the other side of the road. Walk through the gate and the driftwood path leads you to a large 19th century cottage with large bay windows and slate roof. This four star property can accommodate up to six people, and has three bedrooms upstairs, along with a family bathroom and cloakroom. Downstairs you’ll find a large kitchen/dining area fitted out with lovely rustic beech units and butler sink. The living room is at the front of the house and has a woodburning stove should the evenings turn cold.

Lynmouth is in the northwest corner of the beautiful Exmoor National Park, a place to make anyone envious. In this impossibly scenic part of the country it’s easy to fill your days solely with exploring; you have close to seventy thousand hectares at your doorstep. A few miles from Summerville is the Doone Valley, where RD Blackmore set Lorna Doone. It’s a popular area for walkers who usually follow the picturesque Badgworthy Water which takes them past the ruin of Lorna’s Cott, across open moorland and through an abundance of rhododendron bushes. There are great views towards the Bristol Channel and on a clear day you can see the coastline of South Wales.

But Exmoor’s not just for walking. It’s a place that’s brilliant for cycling, running, climbing, horse riding, geo-caching, all in gorgeous surroundings. And at the end of an active day, you can return to Summerville, sink into the extremely comfy sofas and plan the next day’s activities. Should you get fancy a change from the countryside then head down to the sea, just a mile away from your cottage. The harbour is full of places to sit and eat fresh fish and chips while gazing out at the sea, the rugged walls of the bay gently curves away into the distance. You’ll also find the famous cliff-top railway here, a funicular lift that you must ride, hoisting you 862 feet from sea-level Lynmouth to its sister town of Lynton perched high on the cliff.
