Enjoy autumn in the Lake District….without walking boots!

There’s no doubt about it, autumn in the Lake District is a very special time. The fells turn golden and the lakes become misty, meaning the scenery in the Lake District is more stunning than ever. If you haven’t been to the Lake District before because you think it’s a place for fell walkers, mountain bikers and water sport enthusiasts think again. You’ll be pleased to hear that you can enjoy the area and beautiful autumn scenery without having to don a pair of walking boots! They aren’t the most flattering item of clothing are they? Just to be clear however, if you’re planning on walking the fells please wear suitable footwear!

So, I promised you beautiful scenery and no walking boots….let me explain how you can enjoy autumn in the Lake District.

Mountain Goat Tours

Sightseeing tours with Mountain Goat will take you to a variety of beautiful spots in the Lake District, you won’t need to hike anywhere! Examples of tours you can choose from are the Ten Lakes Spectacular, The High Adventure or Beatrix Potter’s favourite countryside. Departing from Ambleside, Bowness, Grasmere, Kendal, Keswick and Windermere all the guided tours will take you to see stunning views, and there are plenty of stops to allow you to take photos of the beautiful autumn scenery.

Windermere Lake Cruises

Windermere Lake Cruises start from Ambleside, Bowness, Brockhole or Lakeside Pier and offer a choice of routes and visiting points around Lake Windermere. You could make a day of it and hop off at Wray Castle so the little ones can play or at Bowness to browse the shops. Alternatively, stay on the boat this autumn and enjoy the stunning views, mountain scenery and the golden coloured wooded islands. There’s no need for walking boots as you cruise past the autumn views on Lake Windermere.

Viewpoint at Rayrigg Road

Simply hop out of your car to enjoy a beautiful view of Lake Windermere, the Langdale Pikes and surrounding fells. In autumn the colours on the lake shore are stunning. Spend 10 minutes admiring the view, taking photos and getting that autumn break selfie your friends would be jealous of.

Hire a Twizy

Silent, cute and lots of fun! Twizy is an electric car that you can hire by the hour or for half a day. Explore the Lake District in autumn with ease as it does 40 miles with each charge. You can hire from Hope Park Café in Keswick and enjoy the autumn colours in Borrowdale. You won’t scare the Herdwick sheep as you pull over to take photos, you’ll get lots of attention as people admire your fun wheels and there’s not a boot lace in sight!

Ravenglass and Eskdale Steam Railway

Known locally as La’al Ratty (‘little railway’ in Olde Cumbrian dialect) this is one of the longest narrow railways in England. Enjoy seven miles of stunning autumn scenery from Ravenglass to Boot station. Travelling across the estuary and through the fells, there’s 7 request stops on the way and a café for refreshments. The journey one-way takes 40 minutes (obviously you can get the train back too), you couldn’t walk 7 miles in that time, even in the fanciest of walking boots.

Lakeland Segway

Award winning, open all year round and based near Newby Bridge and Windermere, Lakeland Segway is an activity everyone can enjoy. You need to be able to stand and lean for an hour but there’s no age restriction. You can’t wear open toed shoes, sandals or flip-flops but trainers and normal flat shoes are fine. Of course if you have walking boots you can wear these too, but you’ll sense the theme by now, you don’t need walking boots! Book to explore the medieval village of Cartmel for an hour or go on an adventure tour to explore the surrounding countryside and Cartmel Racecourse, it will look beautiful in autumn. You can enjoy the scenery as well as the Segway!

Hopefully our ideas have helped the walking boot haters among you realise that you could really enjoy a holiday in the Lake District. You definitely don’t have to hike for miles or climb fell paths to enjoy autumn in the Lake District.
