Description

Croft Cottage is an 18th Century traditional Lake District cottage with an abundance of character and traditional features, set in the small hamlet of Clappersgate, 1 mile outside Ambleside. The cottage is in an elevated position with fantastic views along Lake Windermere, Wansfell and Randy Pike, even better from the patio which is set across the courtyard and slightly further up the fellside. The cottage which sleeps 3 people is cosy and spacious, with quality furnishings in keeping with the cute nature of the property.

Entrance is down steps into a small porch with plenty of room for hanging coats and storing boots, pushchairs and dog bowls. There is an old fashioned 'extra toilet' also off the porch.

Entering the lounge / dining area you will see the feature fireplace with woodburning stove, comfortable seating for 4, TV with DVD player and dining table to one side. Stone flagged floor throughout the downstairs, with underfloor and gas central heating means it's toasty warm in the winter. From the lounge leads into the sunny kitchen which is of a good size with great views over the rooftops towards Lake Windermere, you may even need your sunglasses on to wash up! Benefits from Fridge, freezer, halogen hob and washing machine.

From the lounge are double doors into a small area which provides access outside to the back of the property.

Upstairs, the cottage staircase (which is a little steep) leads to the tastefully decorated master bedroom with king size bed and fitted wardrobes. The second bedroom, with double bed, is great for someone wanting to stretch out (only suitable for 1 though). Both bedrooms benefit from a dressing room just off the landing, which could also be used as a bedroom for a baby as there's room for a cot. The family bathroom is off the landing, it has a 'P' shaped bath with shower over, toilet and wash hand basin. Both bedrooms have excellent views towards Wansfell and the lake.

At the front of Croft Cottage is a generous cobbled courtyard (shared with next door), making loading and unloading very easy. A private carport opposite the cottage houses the table and chairs for the garden and space to store bikes, a pushchair or your kayak. The patio is set above the cobbled area maximising the views towards Lake Windermere, perfect in the sunshine to enjoy a glass of wine. Croft Cottage and the surrounding cottages, share access to the River Brathay along with a generous sized enclosed grassed area with seating on the riverside. The shared garden is in the area with the white railings and black bench. There are boat hooks provided for securing kayaks and canoes. Please note there is a steep ladder down into the water. If you are thinking of bringing a kayak, please call for more details. Access to the River is across the main road 100 yards from the cottage.

Please note that due to the age of this traditional cottage the stone walls hold moisture, causing slight dampness during periods of wet weather. Please also note that the staircase in croft cottage is steep; however, there is a handrail.

NB: Please note the driveway to this property is steep but short, with a couple of tight bends making it possibly unsuitable for low suspension vehicles. It is possibly unsuitable for the elderly or less mobile too if walking up and down especially in cooler and wet weather.

What's included?

We want our holiday cottages to be a 'home for home'. All the beds are made up ready for you, towels are included so no need to bring those, and shower mats are also provided. Two tea towels and a set of oven gloves/oven cloth will be in the kitchen along with a starter pack that includes: washing up liquid, kitchen roll, toilet roll, basic cleaning products, a bin bag in each bin. This is just to 'start you off'; you will need to buy your own once these have run out.

Reviews

Wonderful cottage, clean, great location but unfortunately this time and older and v uncomfortable soft soggy mattress which led to poor sleep and a less restful, relaxing holiday.

Miss C,

A lovely property, well situated close to Ambleside. Comfortably appointed.

Mr T,

Location is everything and this holiday home certainly ticks all the boxes in that area. That said the house itself has a tired look to it. The photos are probably a little older and look nicer than the real thing. It was comfortable enough for us and we had a good stay, but the property is too expensive for what you get.

Ms W,

Great location, easily walkable to Ambleside. Road can be noisy at times but not bad. Good value for money, ticks all the boxes for a solid place to base yourself with your family &/or dog to then go & explore the great outdoors.

Mr H,

Lovely location and great views and walks from the door step. Cottage was OK as a base only to sleep, not comfortable or clean enough for self catering for a week, we eat out everyday due to lack of equipment and lack of cleanliness

Mr G,

Lovely stay at this gorgeous cottage. Parking fantastic. Comfy beds with lovely clean facilities .Ambleside within walking distance. Every thing a small family would want .

Mr S,

Great location. Cottage has everything you need and is kept very well. The underfloor heating downstairs is very efficient and keeps everywhere nice and warm. Cottage is well situated to go to some beautiful places around the lakes.

Mr W,

Great location and accomodation

Mr S,

The cottage is a bit of a run down . The drive is a bit steep.

Mr R,

Lovely views from property, comfortable everything you need. Ashame road a little noisy at times but can't be helped. All in all excellent place to stay. Thank you.

Miss C,

Beautiful little cottage, very clean and tidy and in an ideal location - just 15 minutes walk into Ambleside. We'd definitely book again

Mrs W,

Good location within walking distance of ambleside and countryside walks. Unfortunately we found the bed to be uncomfortable and did not sleep well during the stay. We also found the seating in the living space to be uncomfortable. Property is a little dated and some areas could be cleaner. No fire wood/kindling starter pack provided (other properties we've stayed in have provided this).

Mrs P,

Really lovely cottage. Thank you.

Ms L,

This was a fantastic find. A very cosy cottage with all amenities provided. Great views and an excellent location...It might not be the most up to date cottage, but it proved to be one of the best cottages that I have stayed in at the Lake District. Walking straight from the door to Grasmere, Ambleside, Elterwater, Chapel Stile and Langdale...excellent location. Would definitely recommend

Miss V,

We really enjoyed our stay in this cottage, lovely views and well equipped for our needs and clean and tidy. The welcome chocolates and teas and coffees were not expected but really appreciated thank you so much.

Miss C,
