Applethwaite Hall, formerly known as The Common is a 27-room former gentleman’s residence in the foothills of Banner Rigg, a fell overlooking Windermere in the English Lake District.
Thomas Muirhead the man behind the famous pavilions at 2 English cricket test grounds the Kennington Oval (completed in 1898) and Old Trafford (completed 1895) designed The Common shortly after the completion of the grounds. It was built unusually for the lake district in rendered red brick between 1898 and 1901 for a mysterious Frank A Roberts, about whom little is known.
