Castle Acre is a pretty village steeped in history and takes its name from the walled castle built by the Normans in the 12th Century. There is plenty to occupy visitors of all ages with the Castle ruins, Cluniac Priory and the parish church of St James the Great to explore, all within walking distance of the cottage. A 2minute walk across Stocks Green, is the Ostrich Inn, a 16th Century tavern with an excellent menu and beer garden, or try Whittles Café where you can enjoy breakfast, light lunches and delicious homemade cakes. A popular walk from the village, is the Castle Acre circular walk which takes you along the River Nar and quiet woodland paths, to the village of West Acre, with its walled gardens, theatre and the ruins of an Augustinian Priory where craft beer company Duration and an art gallery are based.

The village is also well placed to discover the beautiful North Norfolk coast, all within an easy 30 to 45minute drive away, through winding country roads. Well worth a visit is Wells-next-the-Sea via Burnham Market and Holkham Hall. Castle Acre lies four miles north of Swaffham where the River Nar is crossed by an ancient route known as the Peddars Way, a popular route with walkers. Also popular all year round is the 46mile long path which begins at Thetford and heads northwards to the coast near Holme-next-the-Sea. The neighbouring village of Great Massingham has a picturesque green and duck pond and is just a short drive away.  Here you can visit the Dabbling Duck for a spot of lunch, followed by an afternoon exploring the Queen’s Norfolk retreat, Sandringham House, which is just 14 miles from the village. Take a tour of the majestic house or visit the royal gardens with woodland walks and adventure playground set within a woodland setting.

Reviews

A wonderful cottage in a wonderful location. Would definitely stay again.

Mr N,

There are not enough superlatives to describe our recent wonderful Norfolk stay. The reservation staff were superb in arranging a very last minute break and ensuring we had all the information we needed prior to our hasty departure. The cottage was an absolute dream. Beautiful interior decor, high quality furnishings and fixtures, all immaculately presented and set in an idyllic village location. The owners could not have provided a more generous welcome. We had a fantastic break and highly highly recommend!

Mrs B,

One of the best cottages we've stayed in - clean, comfortable, quiet and well equipped. We cycled to the cottage and so appreciated the excellent local shop and the very generous provision of kitchen supplies (oils, herbs etc) and welcome basket. Very convenient location in a lovely village with good cycling and walking.

Dr B,

We were so impressed with the cottage and how well equipped it was. A great deal of thought went into making it comfortable and welcoming.

Mr H,

Very comfortable cottage to stay in, could not fault anything. We all really enjoyed our stay

Mr M,

Wonderful beautiful cottage. Stunning decor and lighting. The owners have clearly spent lots of time there themselves and have been extremely generous with the amenities. We particularly liked the small details - like outdoor candle holders and blankets near the door, or the supply of gin & tonic and plenty of ice cubes in the freezer. The kitchen is well stocked too with everything you’d need. Our kids loved the technology - three large TV’s and the two Apple HomePods kept them entertained in the evenings. We came here for our wedding anniversary with our 6 and 9 year olds and would highly recommend.

Mr S,

We loved this cottage...it has been refurbished to a very high standard and was welcoming and utterly charming...quite the best we have stayed in. The extra touches, thoughtfully provided by the owners, were extremely generous and added luxury to our stay. The village location and facilities were also excellent.

Mr S,

The cottage is in an excellent location within the village within a short walk of the riverside, the priory ruins, a pub, fish&chip shop and very good convenience store. It is compact, but extremely well and tastefully fitted out, spotless, and with an attractive small garden. There is some street noise and the occasional roar of military jets during weekdays. A pleasant and unusual surprise is that the kitchen is provisioned with useful food and drink. Highly recommended.

Mr D,

Excellent cottage. Very comfortable and quality of equipment was superb. Stairs are tight and could be a problem for the elderly. Would definitely return if opportunity arises.

Mr W,

A beautiful cottage in a lovely village. The cottage was furnished to a very high standard and had everything possible for a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

Mrs B,

The cottage is located in the beautiful village of Castle Acre, with castle ruins a few minutes walk in one direction and the priority ruins a 5-10 minute walk in the other direction. The pub is about 30 seconds away! The cottage itself is fantastic; it is beautifully furnished with every utensil, facility and comfort that you might ever need. The owners have clearly put a lot of effort into making it as comfortable as possible and this makes it the perfect place to stay. Highly recommended!
