Each UK region has something unique to offer its ramblers. Cornwall is home to 422 miles of magnificent coastline, with sandy beaches, green cliffs and historic sites a plenty. In the north, you can enjoy vast stretches of the South West Coast Path and explore the wilds of Bodmin Moor and in the south you’ll be greeted by momentous historic sites, such as St Michael's Mount off Mount’s Bay. Devon is also home to many spectacular routes on the South West Coast Path and for those who want to take their strolls higher, exploring the Tors on Exmoor is an unmatched hiking experience.
There are 15 National Parks across the UK, each offering a different glimpse into England and Wales’ unique landscapes and ecologies. As the largest county in England, Yorkshire is home to two National Parks, the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors. Gorgeous purple heathland greets you on the Moors, which lead right the way up to the coast, which is in and of itself a great spot to explore on foot. The Dales is full of picturesque farmland and dramatic hills, including the famous Three Peaks, Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-Y-Ghent. The Lake District National Park also has its own Three Peaks, Old Man Coniston, Helvellyn and Scafell Pike. Some prefer to take on one at a time rather than conquer all three in a day, but whatever your preference, unrivalled views of Cumbria will be ready and waiting for you at the summit.
Wales has not one, not two, but three national parks! Snowdonia in the north is easily one of the most breathtaking sceneries in the country, while the Brecon Beacons are nothing short of amazing and the Pembrokeshire Coast on the south coast is perfect for those who love discovering new and diverse coastal landscapes. Speaking of unique coastlines, Norfolk has some of the most fascinating coastal scenery, including mysterious marshland, stunning woodland and unending sandy shores. Neighbouring Suffolk is also home to excellent walking routes across its varied landscape, including its very own 50-mile long coastal path.
Northumberland recently became the first region to open its stretch of the proposed England coastal path, earning it global acclaim. With some of the best dark skies in Europe and more historic sites than other regions, Northumberland is the perfect location for an active holiday in the great outdoors. If a dash of history goes down well in your walks, then why not head to Derbyshire? Regarded as one of Britain’s most famous stately homes, Chatsworth House, Derbyshire has lots of countryside historic attractions for you to take a break on your journeys.
Across southern England also lies numerous Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty for you to sink your teeth, or rather feet, into. Dorset offers some of the most beautiful countryside in England, as well as an ancient coastline with iconic natural features like the impressive Durdle Door. In Sussex, the South Downs National Park offers truly tranquil vistas and dramatic steep white cliffs. If watching waves roll from the panoramic spot of a cliff, then look no further than Kent. Also known as the Garden of England, Kent has a breath-taking section of countryside, including Romney Marsh between Hythe and Dymchurch that was famously called ‘the fifth continent’, due to its biodiversity and natural beauty.
Whether you’re planning on stepping out as a couple, family or a group of rambling friends, our walking holiday cottages will help you to enjoy all the splendour of England and Wales in style. So grab your kit and get booking!
