Description

4 Zoar cottages is a true hidden gem, nestled in a particularly beautiful and wild valley in the heart of Dartmoor’s 365 square miles of National Park - its the perfect escape for lovers of wilderness, horse riding, hiking, cycling, secret wild swimming, and stargazing in properly dark skies after a sundowner in the garden.

The cottage is almost unique in being on the moor itself: Dartmoor’s famous wild ponies will wander up to the garden gate and the uninterrupted view up the Tavy valley encompasses half a dozen of Dartmoor’s magnificent granite-crowned Tors, including Tavy Cleave, perhaps the most spectacular wild swimming spot on Dartmoor.

Strolling out the garden gate, the vista is unmatched: a dozen of Dartmoor’s grandest Tors, including Dartmoor’s best preserved neolithic hill fort.

A ten minute walk from the cottage, down the footpath to the salmon-ladder at Hill Bridge, takes you to the secret lichen-covered Jurassic World of Creason Wood, gorgeous walks along the wooded banks of the River Tavy and hidden pools and waterfalls amidst the lush jungle valley - perfect for a summer post-picnic dip.

Dartmoor is one of the few places in England perfect for horse-riding off-road and off bridlepath, and Zoar is the nearest holiday cottage (20 minutes walk across the moor) to the main remaining Dartmoor riding stable with direct moorland access – top-rated Cholwell Farm.

A 12 minute drive brings Michelin-recommended gasto-pubs including the Dartmoor Inn at Lydford and the Cornish Arms in Tavistock, and Tavistock’s cafes, shops and famous “Pannier Market”. Slightly further are Steven Spielberg’s War Horse filming locations, the Hound of the Baskervilles' deadly mire (it is real – don’t fall in), and the beaches of Cornwall and Devon

The property itself retains many historic features. Downstairs is open plan with a well-equipped kitchen, traditional slate floors, worktops, antique dresser and Esse Ironheart wood-burning cooking stove with an Aga-style oven and hob – and a selection of the owners’ favourite cook-books for you to borrow! Local produce abounds. Slow roast a local lamb shoulder from Cholwell Farm (the riding stables and farm just a walk away), or visit the highly-rated farm shops in the area. Coupled with the kitchen is the cosy dining and living area where you can unwind with a glass of wine after a day exploring. The living area features a smart TV and DVD player (with extensive selection of DVDs for those cosy days if the weather closes in) as well as a Bluetooth speaker and traditional radio/CD hifi, well stocked library and boardgames galore. There are three spacious bedrooms, (one with king-size bed and ensuite shower room/toilet, and two with two twin beds) a further bathroom with bath and shower over.

Reviews

For my wife and I, who like to hike on the moor rain or shine, the cottage location is perfect. The cottage is snug and cosy with an interesting history. Plenty of nice places to eat within a couple of miles drive. Two pubs within a forty five minute walk, (Peter Tavy or Mary Tavy) both excellent beer and really nice food. Tavistock a few miles away, plenty of shops, loads of historic interest, a really nice place in all. If you love the wild beauty of Dartmoor away from everyone then this cottage is for you.

Mr M,

Well worth the money and having snow was a bonus!! Lovely and clean

Mr K,

A great cottage in a wonderful spot for walking and exploring.

Mrs B,

Cottage warm and clean, being on Dartmoor it was quiet, the facilities were more than adequate. WI-FI and TV worked well. The two of us had a very enjoyable stay.

Mr C,

Apart from the fact that we bumped our heads several times on some low doorposts and the beam above the stairwell, plus the fact that the bed in the master bedroom was experienced as a bit hard and short, we thoroughly enjoyed this fully equipped house in such a beautiful location on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. We went out daily to explore this beautiful area with its many bronze age artefacts, medieval ruins, castles, churches, gardens and not to mention the amazing views over Dartmoor and the surrounding countryside. We were also very happy with the 2 garden chairs, to sit outside comfortably, relax and enjoy the beautiful view towards the Moors. All in all we had a wonderful holiday with Zoar cottage as a great base.

Ms M,

Brilliant week spent at Zoar Cottage, it was very comfortable & very well equipped with everything you could need. The location was perfect on top of the moor.

Mrs T,

A beautiful cottage with stunning surroundings, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Lots of lovely walks on our doorstep and we loved waking up and seeing the cows and sheep just outside.

Mrs C,

Very clean, well equipped, great location. Would definitely return.

Mrs B,

A great cottage in a perfect location for walks from the front door. Equipped with everything we needed and more.

Mrs B,

Great cottage, very well equipped and cosy. The location was very good with views over the moors from the garden. The lounge would be a bit small for 6 adults but there was plenty of space around the table. The upstairs shower was one of the best we have had in a holiday cottage. There was some good walks from the door as well as a short drive away. The pub down the road has now closed but the pubs in Mary. Tavy and Peter Tavy were not too far away. The only negative was the double bed which had a slightly rickety metal frame and very hard mattress. Overall had a great holiday

Mrs C,

We all loved our stay, cosy cottage amazing location even highland cattle walking part at breakfast! Hope to be back. Thank you

Mrs Amanda S,

Had a fab stay and was just down the road from my family in Mary Tavy. Would love to stay again.

Ronda r,

Loved it here, did a big birthday bash laughed in the face of the storms! Will be back.

Mrs Susan R,

Super stay-lovely walks from a great location. Perfect long weekend.

Mrs S R,

Everything about the cottage was great. The only negative was the check in/out times of 4pm and 10am, much later earlier than normal.

Mr B,

A cosy cottage on the moor with local village shop. Very pleasant nearby town and lovely pubs and restaurants. The cottage is very comfortable and has a well equipped kitchen and good household equipment. Poor telephone reception and TV reception not always good. A lovely place to stay. Wonderful walks.
