Dog Friendly Things to Do in South Devon
Torquay, one of South Devon’s most famous seaside resorts, is a great place for a dog-friendly holiday as the majority of its major attractions welcome pets. These include Babbacombe Model Village and Dartmouth Steam Railway. There are also a number of dog-friendly beaches in the Torbay area, including Babbacombe beach, Maidencombe beach, St Mary’s Bay, Elberry Cove and Anstey’s Cove.
Further south of Torquay, you’ll find the delightful coastal towns of Paignton and Brixham. The best dog-friendly attraction in Paignton has to be the magical Fairy Cove, a picturesque, secluded beach that is pet-friendly all year round. In Brixham, dog walkers will delight in a wander up to Berry Head Nature Reserve. The Napoleonic Age fort and lighthouse mark the top of this mighty headland and the views across the Torbay area are unmatched. St Mary’s Bay is one of Brixham’s dog friendly beaches and is plenty big enough for your pooch to have a good run around.
Speaking of Dartmouth, this riverside part of Devon is also very welcoming to pets. Dartmouth Castle will happily allow you and your canine companion to roam around its 14th century walls. To make the day extra special, you can ride to the castle via passenger ferry and take in the wonderful views of the estuary, as pets can ride the boat too. If you’re staying on one of our Dartmouth cottages and fancy taking a break from self-catering, Radius 7, Cafe Alf Resco and The Galleon Bar are all dog-friendly eateries in and around the area.
If you’re fancying a Salcombe trip this year then you’ll be happy to hear that North Sands, South Milton Sands and Hope Cove are all dog friendly beaches within a short walk and even shorter drive from Salcombe town centre. The Victoria Inn has its very own ‘A La Bark Menu’ for dogs, comprised of a range of doggy treats and also provide water bowls, blankets and towels, making them one of the most dog-friendly pubs in Salcombe by a country mile. However, the majority of Salcombe pubs and cafes will welcome your four-legged friend.
Exmouth is another wonderful holiday option for people travelling with dogs and has a number of pet-friendly attractions, including Haldon Forest Park, which is often a quieter dog walking spot than the popular South West Coast Path.
