Description

This fascinating property was built around 1500 and was once lived in by a shoemaker and his family.  It has now been beautifully restored and furnished to create a wonderful base to explore Kent.  The Old Cobblers Cottage at Kings Head House is attached to the owner's medieval hall house and offers spacious and bright accommodation full of original beams and antique furniture.  There is a wood burning stove in the sitting room for cosy evenings around the fire and there is a separate snug TV room for relaxing or listening to music. The dining area is separated from the living room with original feature timbers. Outside the chimney stack is a focal point and was copied by Vita Sackville West and used in her design at Sissinghurst Castle - the castle and gardens are minutes away.  You can walk to the village pub which offers a great selection of food and drink and there is a general store across the road.  Close by are the Wealden towns of Cranbrook and Tenterden and Rye is only a short drive away.  Kent is known as the Garden of England for good reason and there are numerous local vineyards and farm shops to explore. From golf courses and beaches to forest walks and cycle paths this really is an all round holiday destination. Please note this property does not accept children under 12 years.

Reviews

Disappointing. TV room too small for 4 people and very uncomfortable. Property may be 500 years old but stairs and uneven flooring bordering on dangerous for children or elderly.

Rev R,

This cottage has lots of charm and authenticity. The owners make you feel very comfortable indeed. We stayed here in autumn so made no use of the garden which would have been slightly noisy otherwise. Sissinghurst is a top location for visiting sights such as National Trust properties. We have never lived slap bang in the middle of a village and it was a great experience, being within walking distance to the shop, the pub and the chippy. Tall people (like us) beware. You have to duck quite a bit in places but we managed to avoid any bumps on the head. Parking is great. Just as the seating, the bathroom and the beds. A great property!

Ms T,

Excellent restored cottage in a lovely area of kent

Mr J,

The cottage is delightful and the village pretty, with a lovely pub and very handy well stocked shop nearby. The owners were generous with the essentials and lots of lovely thoughtful touches, which is not the standard for holiday cottage lets and therefore very much appreciated. The road running through the village was busier than I expected, though the additional glazing of the windows does eliminate a lot of this noise. It is of course far more noticeable with the doors or windows open, but I suspect this wouldn't bother everyone. Our stay unfortunately coincided with some emergency roadworks which greatly exacerbated the problem. This aside I would very much recommend this cottage for its comfort and the decor. As you would expect with a cottage of this age the original features are very quirky and extra care is required on the stairs. Thank you to the owners for the use of their beautiful cottage for the week.

Miss A,

A wonderful, quirky, historic property with all the modern conveniences one could wish for ... and a great pub / restaurant just up the road.

Mr H,

Lovely quirky place, but the low beam in the kitchen was a challenge for our tall family. Location was great for a variety of days out. Traffic was quite loud at times.

Mrs M,

This is a lovely cottage with many original features. It does have low beams and uneven floors in places and care needs to be taken on the stairs. The kitchen and bathroom are well fitted out and cleaning products and soaps are provided which is nice. The beds are comfortable. The location is good for local walks to Sissinghurst Castle and also to nearby Cranbrook. The garden is enclosed (useful if you have a dog) but not very private as it faces onto a main road. It makes an excellent base to explore the Kent countryside and coast.

Mr F,

Excellent cottage, very comfortable and well equipped. Also good central location for visiting historic properties, Canterbury etc.

Mr L,

Wonderful, warm and characterful cottage with a small garden for the dog. Excellent location in Sissinghurst, well insulated from traffic noise and easy to explore the local area. Just simply a beautiful cottage to stay in.

Mrs H,

The property is lovely, full of character, very comfortable, with beautiful furniture and furnishings. It's very well equipped and the owners are very friendly and helpful. We had everything we needed for a lovely stay.
