Reviews

The cottage is situated in a beautiful setting, close to 2 public houses albeit the closest one closed for Christmas. It has beautiful views and many walks close by including Catbells which is ideal for all the family only a few minutes drive away.

Mr H,

Lovely little cottage next to the road. Great location for Bassenthwaite, Buttermere and Ennerdale. Very well equipped and lovely decoration and furnishings as very comfortable.

Mrs S,

Every thing was first class.

Mr T,

Lovely cottage on the edge of Bassenthwaite village, ideal location for visiting the more northern lakes and Keswick. Very comfortable beds, good shower and spotlessly clean. Nice pubs nearby - we tried the Sun Inn in the village and The Pheasant just a few minutes drive round the top of the Lake. Try to go to Bassenthwaite Lake cafe, set in the old railway carriages from the more recent Murder on the Orient Express film, best veggie breakfast I’ve had in ages.

Ms T,

A wonderful and cosy place with great views and good links to Keswick.

Mr B,

Gorgeous cottage that made a great base for exploring the Lakes District

Ms T,

Lovely comfortable cosy cottage. Welcome pack of coffee, tea, milk and biscuits was very much appreciated. Bed was very comfortable. Had everything needed to enjoy a break away from home.

Ms H,

A small amount of soap and shampoo in the bathroom would be welcome as the shops were in Keswick and we forgot to bring . we forgot to bring them.

Mrs W,

Rosie Cottage was in an ideal location to explore the Keswick area and offered a comfortable and easy base to return to after a day's walking or exploring.

Mrs L,

Very pleased with location, cleanliness and comfort of the cottage. Unfortunately we were let down by heating not being switched on prior to our arrival as detailed in the welcome book (arriving with the temperature at 8 degrees Cent.). While kitchen and bedroom heaters could be switched to provide instant heat, the storage heater in the lounge being on "off peak" (on at 12 midnight) did not produce any heat until the following day. This was completely unacceptable as the living room was too cold to be used. Arriving after 3.00pm we should not have been expected to go searching for logs for the stove, and in any case for the price paid for the property the least we could have expected was a starter kit for the stove. We note from the visitors book that a welcome pack has been provided, which we did not get. This spoiled our first day and initial impressions of the property.

Mr L,

The cottage its self was beautiful very cosy and lovely wasn’t very impressed on the cleanliness on arrival.

Location

The attractive village of Bassenthwaite, a mile and a half from the shores of the lake of the same name, is situated six miles north of Keswick and a similar distance from Cockermouth. The village has a traditional village green, which with wooden swings and space for ball games, make it an ideal safe playing area for children. A stream, complete with ducks, runs through the heart of this peaceful Lakeland village.

Bassenthwaite (A591 not the village itself) is served by the X4 bus which runs between Penrith, Keswick, Cockermouth and Workington and intermediate villages.

There is an abundance of walking opportunities in the area including the mighty Skiddaw, Lord's Seat, Ullock Pike and Binsey Fell, described by Wainwright as 'a simple walk for a big view'.A gentle climb of three miles from Bassenthwaite brings you to the Cumbria Way and Dash Falls.  A stroll through fields takes you to the ancient church of St Bega in an idyllic location and the scene of many weddings. Dodd Wood, on the slopes of Skiddaw, offers a variety of way marked trails and a viewing platform for the Osprey. Excellent views reward those who make it to Dodd Summit.

Bassenthwaite Lake, four miles long and three quarters of a mile wide, is the most northerly of the lakes.

Bassenthwaite Lake is a very important place for wildlife. Hundreds of birds including the osprey migrate to the lake and fish such as atlantic salmon come to Bassenthwaite Lake to spawn. Don't miss a visit to Dubwath silver meadows, a wetland nature reserve is at the northern end of Bassenthwaite Lake. Visitors to the reserve can expect to spot grasshopper warbler, curlew, greylag, geese, reed bunting and meadow pipit.

Don't miss a visit to the Lake District Wildlife Park, there are 24 acres of parkland with over 100 species of wild and domestic animals. Enjoy a tour of the Lakes Distillery, the largest whisky distillery in England, is set in an area of unimaginable beauty next to Bassenthwaite Lake. Mirehouse is a beautiful family run historic house with gardens, lakeshore and woodland playgrounds.

Just off the A66 at the Western end of Bassenthwaite Lake you will find the Bassenthwaite lake station cafe, aboard a full-size replica steam train, used as the filmset for the 2017 film, Murder on the Orient Express located on the restored former railway station.
