Visiting Aldeburgh  

What many don’t realise about Aldeburgh is that it has had its fair share of famous fans over the years. Sir Francis Drake’s ship The Golden Hind was built here in 1577, while a more contemporary famous face to the town is composer and artist Benjamin Britten, who lived in Aldeburgh for much of his life. Britten’s residency has had a fundamental impact on Aldeburgh and neighbouring Snape’s artistic scene.  

Every year, Aldeburgh hosts a renowned music and arts festival in June each year. The event was first conceived by Britten himself and brings jazz music, opera, dance, classical orchestras and art exhibitions to residents and visitors every year. Aldeburgh Beach is a large, pebble beach that is perfect for a coastal walk, particularly as it is located on the Suffolk Coast Path. Dip your toes in the sea whilst you ramble along with an ice cream in hand, or walk down to Maggi Hambling’s statue on the beach, ‘The Scallop’, which was crafted in honour of Britten. 

Aldeburgh is also known for its diverse and eclectic high street and is a great spot for those who love a spot of retail therapy and supporting small, local businesses. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs, but the best part of Aldeburgh’s centre is that you can feel its history all around. Many of the businesses here have been open for decades, one of the most veteran stores being O+C Butchers (which is actually a clothes shop), that has been here for over 100 years.  

There are also a number of quirky local attractions to explore, including Aldeburgh Cinema which is one of the country’s oldest cinema houses, and Benjamin Britten’s home, The Red House.
