From trekking in the beautiful hills and valleys of Northumberland, such as College Valley and Ingram Valley, to cycling through the colourful woodlands of Kielder Water and Forest Park and exploring the history of the Romans on Hadrian’s Wall, whatever you choose to do, you are guaranteed to have many fun-filled days exploring this picturesque part of Northumberland.

The Northumberland National Park is an Area of Outstanding Beauty (AONB) and Special Scientific Interest, covering 400 square miles, stretching from the Cheviot Hills down to Hadrian’s Wall. Northumberland offers incredible stargazing opportunities. Awarded an ‘International Dark Sky Park’, Northumberland has the darkest skies in the country. Stargazers and astronomers will love a trip to Kielder Water and Forest Park as there is a purpose-built observatory where you can discover more about the night sky and gaze deep into the galaxy and you might even be lucky to witness the Northern Lights during your visit!

There is lots of wildlife to be spotted in the Northumberland countryside. Keep an eye out for lots of interesting animals on your walks around the area including red grouse, deer, buzzards, ravens, kestrels, deer, wild goats and the lovely red squirrels.

National Park Destinations

Located on the edge of the National Park is the small, attractive town of Wooler. Known locally as the gateway to the Glendale Valley, Cheviot Hills and the National Park, you are ideally situated to explore the wonderful surrounding hills and open countryside. Staying in a holiday cottage in Wooler, you will find a good selection of grocery shops selling local produce for you to take back to your cottage to prepare tasty meals, from fresh bread to locally sourced meats. During your holiday, experience the local hospitality and culinary delights of one of the excellent local restaurants and pubs in the area, many are dog friendly too!  Wooler is host to the annual Glendale Show, held on August Bank Holiday Monday, an event not to be missed.  This agricultural show is popular with both locals and visitors as it showcases many aspects of rural and farming life, and provides a fun day out for all ages.

The market town of Rothbury lies on the banks of the River Coquet, at the foot of the Simonside Hills. The town’s high street has a great selection of shops selling locally produced food, lovely coffee shops, riverside walks, a golf course and the National Trust’s Cragside House, Gardens and Estate is well worth a day visit as there is plenty to see and do. Cragside is the former home of Lord Armstrong, a great 19th Century inventor and industrialist. There is an endless network of walks and trails, suitable for all abilities, that makes this estate popular with walkers and cyclists.
