Location
Craster
Craster is a picturesque fishing village and a popular holiday destination thanks to its lovely harbour, coastal walks and proximity to castles, beaches and the stunning countryside of the Northumberland National Park. We also have some superb cottages to make your Northumberland holiday unforgettable.
Craster is known as the ‘home of the kipper’ and, when you explore the village you might smell these famous fish being smoked in the sheds of the Robson and Sons Smokery. You can sample Craster kippers in many cafes and restaurants around the village and area, but one of the best places to go is The Piper’s Pitch, a catering van in the Craster Quarry Car Park. Their kipper-in-a-bun is highly rated as are their other delicious and unusual sandwich fillings and sweet treats.
Other great places to eat include the Shoreline Café, the Stable Yard, and the Jolly Fisherman. Once you’re fuelled up, why not take the coastal path north through pretty open fields towards Dunstanburgh Castle and Embleton Bay.
Embleton
The village of Embleton, north of Craster dates back to the 12th century and offers an array of fantastic pubs and restaurants, from the Greys Inn to the Sambuca Blue Bell Italian restaurant.
The wide sandy beach close to the village is a big drawcard for birdwatchers, rockpoolers and watersports enthusiasts. Dunstanburgh Castle (which is dog friendly) makes for a dramatic backdrop.
Golfers love the Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Club with its bracing views, and the food served at the club house is excellent too (they often do special offers if you book a round of golf).
If you’re a keen walker, there are some fine walks beyond Embleton to Newton-by-the-Seam and on to Beadnell and Seahouses, or south towards Howick, Boulmer and Alnmouth.
