Location
Warkworth
Warkworth is almost completely encircled by the River Coquet and is dominated by the splendid medieval castle. Half a mile upriver is the famous Hermitage, a rock-hewn retreat with a very poignant history; it is quite unique in England and can only be reached by a guided rowing boat. Being within walking distance of a superb stretch of sandy beach and having some of the loveliest river scenery in the county, it is not surprising that Warkworth is a popular holiday location.
Lovers of wildlife will enjoy glorious walks beside the river and castle grounds, listen to the occasional woodpecker, and catch a rare glimpse of a red squirrel, deer and otters if you are lucky enough. During the summer months rowing boats are available for hire and provide a relaxing pastime whilst enjoying the picturesque river scenery. Boats trips are available at Amble either for fishing trips or to cruise around Coquet Island, a bird reserve, home to a large colony of Roseate Terns. The market town of Alnwick is Alnwick 7 miles. Golf, fishing and horse riding available locally.
