Reviews

We've just had a great stay at Red Lion House and we'll definitely be back! A beautiful house in a wonderful setting and stocked to the brim with everything you need; it's a wonderful location for a break. We did a long weekend with 9 adults, 2 teenagers and 3 dogs and loved the place. Fabulous walks from the door, easy access to both the stunning Northumberland coast and border country and a lovely pub just next door. Perfect in every way and definitely a 10 out of 10 from all of us. TIM WALKER

Mr W,

We have had the most idyllic week with all the family. The house is stunning and the garden was a dream for the little grandchildren and doggies!. Lovely pub round the corner with fab food. Would definitely come again in the future

Mrs C,

A GREAT EXPERIENCE ALL ROUND! Our party was a group of 9 friends with our dogs and we all had a wonderful time at this lovely house - very homely and spacious with everything we really needed for our holiday. No disappointing realisation on arrival that it was not as nice as it looked on the internet, as is so often the case, and all was clean and well presented. Red Lion house is full of character, is stylish and comfortable and had more than enough space for us all. The garden was a huge bonus, especially when you have dogs, and we even had a fantastic Aurora Borialis display on two of our nights!! So great to have the pub still in such a small village (keep up the good work guys!) and there are 2 others in walking distacnce (if you like walking!) Beautiful surroundings and loads to do in the area. Would highly recommend for a large family or group of friends and would love to return sometime as we merely scratched the surface of exploring and fully utilising all the house and area had to offer. Susan and owners were all super-helpful and good at responding. Thank you for allowing us to stay at your beautiful property.

Miss H,

An absolutely stunning house in a stunning area . A minute walk to the pub with great food , owner was very easy to contact and he’s very helpful. Totally recommend this house for a large party .

Mrs T,

The house is spacious & comfortable & was ideal for an extended family gathering. The area is great for walking & cycling, & the pub round the corner is friendly & welcoming with excellent pub food!

Dr F,

Red Lion House is situated in the beautiful Coquet Valley in Northumberland, and makes lovely accommodation for a self-catering holiday. It is spacious, comfortable, clean and very well appointed. You get a lovely orangery and large garden as well. The owners have left some of their stuff in the house, which is also available for use. Very highly recommended.

Mr B,

This is a truly stunning property, both inside and out -- it's even more beautiful than in the photos. The location is ideal, with numerous walks in the National Park from the doorstep, and a friendly pub with great food just a stone's throw away. Both Kris, the owner, and Susan, the local contact, were very helpful and friendly. Our group of 7 humans and 3 dogs spent an extremely comfortable and enjoyable week, and we would love to come back.

Ms D,

Red Lion House is situated in a beautiful part of Northumberland with great access to coast and hills. Having the pub in Alwinton a few metres away is a real advantage. The house is ideal for multi generational use (although no downstairs bedroom) with very comfortable beds. It’s great having three separate sitting rooms all with comfortable sofas to which to retreat. The conservatory is a great dining space for a large group. The telescope is a real bonus. The huge garden in mid summer was spectacular. This is clearly a family home and consequently is very well equipped. There is plenty of parking. We would book again for our family.

Mr G,

We couldn’t have asked for a better place! Everything about Red Lion House was perfect. A stunning, homely accommodation that we didn’t want to leave. We tried the local Rose & Thistle and highly recommend the food. We hope to return to this beautiful part of the world and especially Red Lion House.

Mr R,

This is our second stay at this house and if we could we will.come back year after year. Beautiful house in gorgeous settings in a lovely village. Owners are very easy to contact

Mrs L,

Visiting Northumberland with three families, with children of differing ages, Red Lion House was perfect. There was a huge amount of space for everyone and the amazing garden and garden games were invaluable. Everything that could be wanted was available and the contact with the owners was quick and easy. Everyone agreed that we would return, great location and an amazing house.

Mrs N,

Wonderful house very well equipped. Good communication with owners who were very helpful and approachable. Smooth meet and greet and easy departure. A very good place for a group holiday. Decor lovely.

Ms B,

This is by far the best property we have stayed. It was home from home in a perfect location. Kris and Merete, were great hosts and went above and beyond with little touches to make us feel at home. We made great use of the orangery for our evening meals. I love the idea of the agar too, we made good use in of it in their well equipped kitchen. The garden was incredible too. We also visited their local pub, The Rose & Thistle, the staff there were great with a faultless service, they accommodated our group of 10 with no issues, the food met our high standards too. Thank you for allowing us to stay at your gorgeous property. We can’t wait to return.

Jade M,

Everything was just beautiful and so comfortable and cosy. All bedrooms were lovely and spacious - the bath in the master was monstrous in a good way and like a swimming pool for our little girl. The piano room was our favourite with the fire lit, couldn't have asked for anything more! We had a wonderful stay, thank you so much.

Mrs N,

Red Lion House is a wonderful house which has been renovated to an exacting standard. Its both cosy and spacey and can easily host a family gathering of 10. The location is lovely, surrounded by hills and farmland and plenty of walks. We found the quality of the kitchen and appliances to be very good, and the bathrooms are very well appointed. There's an open fire or stove in each of the public rooms and outside is a lovely conservatory with its own stove and dining table. I would thoroughly recommend!

Mr B,

We decided, with an 11 month old puppy, that for a holiday a house rather than a hotel would probably suit us better. We wanted something with luxury and a lovely garden and plenty of room in case of bad weather. Red Lion House was just amazing, so clean and tidy, and well equipped. We felt at "home" immediately on arrival, after an 8 hour drive through awful traffic. We had a really lovely warm welcome from Sue and the gift pack left by the owners was exceptional, even containing organic doggy treats that were much loved by the puppy (need to source the same make!). Lots of fridge, freezer and cupboard space. Not being familiar with range cooking, our morning croissants were hit and miss but that added to the fun. The orangery was a wonderful place to sit in the comfortable armchairs, with a large drink, watching the sunset over the hills and looking at the beautiful and clearly much loved garden . We ate in the Rose and Thistle (good food and a great pint), the Star Inn in Harbottle (amazing pizza), and the Turks Head in Rothbury, and recommend all three. We ventured into the National Park and had a wonderful picnic on the bank dangling our feet in the river. The main bathroom at Red Lion House, with the amazing freestanding bath, was wonderful. Every room has been decorated with love and has everything one could want or need. We had gorgeous weather but agreed that Red Lion House would also be fantastic in the winter with roaring fires in the sitting rooms. As the weather was boiling, we couldn't justify lighting a fire but a good excuse to return! To de-stress after a very tough year, Red Lion House was perfection. It didn't feel like a holiday rental, it felt like home and - no question - we will be back.

Mr F,

We had an amazing week with our family in this beautiful house. The location was fab - set in a quiet village, with stunning views of the Northumberland National Park from the back garden. The house felt very homely, decorated really nicely, comfy beds and had everything we needed for a big birthday celebration holiday. So much to do and see in the surrounding area. We'll definitely be back! Thank you to the lovely owners too, as they were great at communicating before and after our stay.

Mrs M,

The house was perfect for my husband’s birthday celebration. It was spacious and a huge bonus was the orangerie in the garden where we spent most of our time. The spacious garden led to family games of cricket rounders and various others the children made up. The children were delighted by the daily hedgehog walk across the garden. The house was spotless and full of everything we needed. We had a chef cook for us one night which was perfect and a walk to the pub in Harbottle for Sunday lunch was perfect. The icing on the cake was watching a meteor shower in the garden. We loved the place !

Mr D,

We had a fabulous holiday at Red Lion House. It was perfect for all our needs. The bedrooms were all spacious, with lovely views and the bathrooms were all beautifully decorated. It was great to have a number of living spaces to either gather together or to have some time apart. The kitchen/dining area was always warm and cosy thanks to the aga and the kitchen was exceptionally well equipped. The Orangery was the icing on the cake, so peaceful and calm. We loved the extensive garden, plenty of room for the children to run round and lovely borders for the adults to admire. An added bonus not included in the description was the grand piano. I hadn't played in years but having the chance to play again has encouraged me to think about getting a piano of my own. We can't wait to return. Thank you to the owners for sharing their beautiful home.

Mrs O,

We had a fantastic holiday at the Red Lion. We needed quiet, peaceful, traditional and plenty of space. This We got in bucket loads. The garden was huge and very pet friendly. The orangery was fantastic with a telescope for your pleasure. There's a pub called The Rose and Thistle, it serves great food to sit in or take away. We had a lovely holiday and will definitely be back. Can't recommend this place highly enough.
