Access Statement

Homildon Cottage used to be three old shepherd’s cottages which were joined together and renovated. It is on the whole roughly on one level (although there are steps along the length) with one bedroom on a second level.

There is parking available for at least three cars, depending on the size of car. Parking is on a gravelled driveway. From the gravelled driveway there is a small paved area surrounding the house.

Access to the house is through the utility room door (threshold height 25cm, width 77cm). There is a bench and hooks for coats and boots storage. The utility room also has the clothes washer, drier, a butler sink and a separate toilet (no grab rails).

The utility room leads through to the tiled conservatory (door width 63cm). The conservatory has a table with 6 chairs. There is a tiled step up to the door through to the living room – 17cm high and 45cm deep. The door through to the living room is 83cm wide.
The living room is carpeted, with seating for 8, and leads through to the kitchen. There are two steps up to the kitchen, (14cm high x 25cm deep and 14cm x 80cm deep, 69 cm wide and no handrail, although there is a window ledge by the steps to lean on). The door to the kitchen is 67cm wide.

The kitchen has a table seating 8; the floor is wooden floorboards. There are 5 carpeted steps up to the hallway from the kitchen, 19cm high x 29cm deep x 111cm wide. There is one handrail, on the right as you go up the stairs. The carpeted steps continue up from the hallway to the landing (6 steps 19cm high x 29cm deep x 82cm wide). There is again one handrail, on the right as you go up the stairs.

The double bedroom on the second level has bare floorboards, a door width of 66cm, and the bed height is approx. 68cm. Also from top of the stairs to the kitchen, the door to the hallway is 73cm wide and
there is a 5cm step down. The hallway is carpeted and is 110cm wide.

The first door on the right is the family bathroom. The door is 72cm wide. There is a bath with a shower over it, the bath height to clear is around 56cm. There is also a toilet
and basin, and a heated towel rail. The bathroom has no grab rails.

The next door is the twin bedroom. The door is 72cm wide. This bedroom is carpeted.
The height of both beds is around 56cm.

At the end of the hallway are steps up to further rooms. There are two steps 17cm high x 30cm deep x 85cm wide (no handrail). On the right after these steps is the study – door width 72cm. In the study is a desk with chair and an armchair. Ahead at the top of the steps is a double room, door width 73cm and bed height around 53cm. The hallway continues to the left and leads through a doorway approx. 87cm wide. On the left is the original front door to the house, now a fire exit (72cm wide).

On the right is the master bedroom (doorway 71cm wide). This room has a kingsize bed (approx. 62cm high) and an ensuite bathroom (door 68cm wide). The ensuite has a toilet, basin and shower (step to clear 23cm high). The bathroom has no grab rails.

Outside Homildon Cottage, the garden is relatively flat and open with plenty of space and lawns. There is a bench providing seating directly outside the cottage. A separate outdoor table and seating is accessible via the flat lawn or a stepping stone path.

An outbuilding provides an additional space for use as a games room or drying area. This is accessible from the driveway via a gravel path with an uneven surface including four steps 10cm high x 50cm deep x 90cm wide (no handrail). The flooring within the outbuilding is level lino.

Description

Located in the hamlet of Humbleton near Wooler, on the border of the Northumberland National Park, Homildon is an extremely attractive traditional cottage dating back to the early 1800's. Nestled in a secluded hollow, it provides a sense of isolation while still being within easy reach of local amenities. A bridleway leads from the door into the National Park and the famous St Cuthbert’s Way.
The large rear garden offers a peaceful haven looking out onto historic Homildon Hill. The current owners use the property regularly as a retreat, and have updated the facilities to meet the expectations of today's holiday makers.

Bringing Your Dog on Holiday to Homildon Cottage

Welcomes well behaved dogs (up to 2) @ £25.00 per dog per week or part thereof. When you book you will be asked to provide some information about your pet which will aide the owner in ensuring that the property is set up to welcome them.

 

A bit of K9 etiquette should be observed during your stay:-

  • Your pet should not be left in the property unattended (unless crated - crates can be hired)
  • Your pet should not be allowed in the bedrooms or on furniture
  • On booking for your pet, you are confirming that it is fully up to date on its flea treatment.
  • Well behaved dogs and children are welcome at Homildon however, please note that the garden whilst for the most part is fenced with agricultural stock wiring, is not fully secure and there is an unfenced pond and wildlife area adjacent to the property (not part of Homildon's land).

A spacious, well equipped and comfortable cottage in a beautiful location. The large, lovely, farmhouse style kitchen provided myriad utensils and crockery alongside ‘staple’ goods such as oils, herbs, spices and condiments. The dresser in the sun room was choc a bloc with jigsaws and games for all ages. The cottage has a beautiful, secluded garden with lovely views out on to the fell. It is in a great location, feeling remote, but only a twenty minute, and very pretty walk into Wooler ……….. or a few minutes’ drive. A lovely place to stay and we are looking forward to returning.

We enjoyed our stay here very much, a comfortable and well equipped house right beside the gate into the National Park where there are simply lovely walks to be enjoyed. Right at the end of a track, only walkers and runners would pass by the house, so it is a quiet location. Plenty of thought has gone into what is provided, especially in the kitchen, and thoughtful extra dog towels were available which were needed as the weather was wet and wild for some of our holiday. The welcome pack was thoughtful and a nice surprise. The information about the house was well presented, as were the walks suggestions and what to do while we were there. We have an Aga at home, so it was lovely to be able to enjoy the background warmth provided by it as well as cook on it. We spent a very relaxing quiet week here with outings to Alnwick and Bamburgh but to be honest, we were happy to walk out the door and explore locally with our dog.

This cottage is wonderful. A lovely spacious house, with loads of character, warm and cosy, a pretty garden and walks straight from the door. Only a short drive from the small town of Wooler where you can find everything you need for your stay and surrounded by beautiful countryside.

The cottage was lovely and everything was very well thought out. The kitchen was very cosy and it was great to have an Aga. It kept the house nice and warm and was lovely to cook on. Having Aga toast for breakfast was a real treat, plus tasty stews in the evening. We thought the kitchen was very well equipped too with crockery, cutlery and cooking implements. It was great to have a log burner as well. We used it on two evenings when it was chilly outside and it made the sitting room feel very cheerful. The conservatory was a nice addition - light and airy and good for doing a puzzle and chatting over coffee etc. The bedrooms were very pleasant and the beds most comfortable. I'm sure the garden must be great to sit in during the summer evenings. We really appreciated being able to walk from the doorstep and took our dog round and up Humbleton Hill several times at different times of day. Wonderful views. All in all we thought it made an excellent base for a holiday in north Northumberland.

The cottage was in a very quiet location, but only a twenty five minute walk to the amenities in Wooler. The garden is beautifully kept and is a haven of peace and tranquility. The cottage catered for our every need with excellent equipment, especially in the kitchen.

We really enjoyed our stay in this house which is well positioned for trips to the coast and the fascinating interior. Wooler itself is also appealing with an excellent Italian and brilliant distillery/ bistro. Local shops have excellent supplies tho the Co-op is the only (but fine) fruit and veg source. Kitchen is extremely well supplied; garden and conservatory are excellent and beds were very comfy.

We were delighted with Homildon Cottage. The configuration of rooms was ideally suited to our family holiday and we were able to use the study to accommodate a two year old in a travel cot.Lots of internal space and a wonderfully large garden for children and dog to roam. The ability to walk directly from the garden into the hills was a real bonus which we greatly appreciated. The cottage was prepared immaculately and the welcome packs for us and the dog were much appreciated. Homildon Cottage is the most comprehensively equipped cottage we have encountered. The owners seem to have thought of everything and we felt privileged to stay in what is clearly the owners second home rather than just a basically equipped holiday home investment. The location is beautiful and we were fortunate to have fabulous weather for the entire week.Our BBQ , seated at the large garden table , in the evening sunshine was delightful.

We all enjoyed the staying at the cottage for a fortnight. The garden gave us all lots of fun and relaxation. The kitchen had every utensil needed. The conservatory and the kitchen gave us plenty of room to spread out. Plenty of books, games etc. for a quiet read when required. A walk from the cottage to the hill was ideal.

Homildon is situated in a quiet rural location just beyond the hamlet of High Humbleton. A bridleway leads from the door into the National Park and the famous St Cuthbert’s Way.

The market town of Wooler is just over a mile to the east, well within walking distance or a short drive. Wooler offers all the local amenities one would expect from a market town including a late-opening Co-Op supermarket, bank, deli, Post Office, pharmacy, butchers, bakers, restaurants and several excellent local public houses. The local Doddington Dairy produces excellent cheese and ice creams. Buses connect to Berwick, Alnwick, Morpeth and Newcastle while “Ron’s Taxis” offer a convenient local service.

Wooler hosts the Cheviot Centre and many popular events through the year such as the Glendale Show and the Wooler Wheel. Early visitors included Daniel Defoe, Sir Walter Scott and local heroine Grace Darling. The magnificent backdrop of Humbleton Hill is mentioned in the opening scenes of Shakespeare’s Henry IV.

The rugged beauty of the Cheviot Hills and renowned River Tweed form a picturesque border with Scotland as well as offering wide-open spaces within the National Park which is literally a few paces from our front door. In 2013, the park was awarded gold tier designation by the International Dark Sky Association – making it officially the best place in England for stargazers to enjoy the heavens.

The foothills with their quiet back roads and bridleways are ideal for many activities, including cycling, horse riding, fishing and rock climbing. The 900ft high Humbleton Hill is capped by an Iron Age hill fort, one of many in the area. Close by is Chillingham Castle and the Ford and Etal Estate with its Heatherslaw Light Railway, Corn Mill and English Heritage Castle. Explore the famous Flodden battlefield, Maelmin Heritage Trail and the 4,500 year old Duddo standing stones.

The main A697 road lies to the North of Humbleton and runs round the edge of Wooler. This links Northumberland to the Scottish Borders and gives easy access to both Edinburgh and Newcastle. The coastal town of Berwick-upon-Tweed is only 18 miles to the north where there is a main line railway service and further amenities including an M&S, Tesco’s and PC World.

To the east of Homildon is the magnificent coastline of Northumberland, which is recognised as an area of outstanding natural beauty. The magnificent east coast provides a mixture of sandy beaches, historic castles and the world class bird sanctuary of the Farne Islands, with the historic castles at Bamburgh and Lindisfarne about a half hour drive away.

Wooler has a 9 hole golf course with other excellent links nearby including Belford, Goswick, and Bamburgh. Shooting is available locally with first class grouse shooting in the Lammermuirs and Cheviot Hills together with many organised pheasant and partridge shoots. Nearby the River Till, a tributary of the Tweed provides productive salmon and trout fishing.
