When the glaciers of the last ice age retreated from these shores 13,000 years ago, they left behind the dramatic fells and valleys of Cumbria. The earliest inhabitants of this land arrived in the Mesolithic era, roughly 3,000-5,000 years later.

The many fells (214 according to Wainwright) and lakes that characterise Cumbria make it one of the most picturesque regions in the UK.
