Description

Set in serenity in the tiny hamlet of Newbiggin, just above the Dales village of Askrigg, sits Howgate Farm. Having been in the same family for generations, the former farmhouse has been lovingly given a brand new lease of life for very fortunate guests.

As you look across the wonderful garden and uninterrupted view to Addlebrough plateau, the absolute peace and quiet is only broken by birdsong, the calls of newborn lambs and, if you’re lucky enough, the very occasional aeronautic show by jets out practising their spectacular routines.

The property has everything one could need for a family or friends gathering; space, comfort and ease of use have been paramount in the renovation. Beautiful Denby kitchenware, local artwork and quality furnishings are respectful to the rustic charm of the building. A smart TV, log burning stove and games cupboard mean you’ll be well-entertained if you chose to stay in. And when you want to venture out, this part of the Dales provides some exceptional road cycling, mountain biking and hiking. Or head to Lake Semerwater, a mere 13 minute drive away, perfect for wild swimming, watching wildlife and watersports or, if you have your own kit, canoeing, paddleboarding, sailing or windsurfing.

And, if you’ve worked up an appetite, stroll down through the fields to Askrigg; head to the Bakewell cafe for homemade delights, or to one of the three pubs offering great food and drink. There is also a well-stocked village shop. A little further afield is the 3 AA rosette Yorebridge House, if fine dining is more your thing or a private setting is required for a special occasion.

Reviews

The accommodation is beautifully furnished, comfortable and spacious, and has everything you could need. We had a wonderful week there.

Mrs R,

The cottage is simply beautiful: well equipped, attractively furnished and decorated and in a lovely location. We really enjoyed our time there and were very comfortable. We felt that the owners had gone out of their way to make it a really lovely place to stay. We hope to be back one of these days!

Mr P,

We had a wonderful stay in this beautiful location at Howgate Farm We can thoroughly recommend it

Mrs W,

Beautiful cottage, immaculately clean and comfortable. Wonderful location and views. Ideally positioned for exploring the Yorkshire Dales.

Mrs P,

Wonderful cottage, we loved it. Very comfortable, wish we'd booked for longer. So peaceful, beautiful countryside, walks from the door and plenty to do locally.

Ms A,

Howgate Farm is in a great location; a short walk from Askrigg and makes a great base for walks and bike rides from the door. Plus easy reach of nearby attractions. The cottage is pristine and fairly spacious for six. Although we didn’t need any assistance, the very friendly owners are just next door and seemed very happy to help.

Mr N,

We had the most amazing time at Howgate Farm. The perfect location for a family get together. The cottage is well equipped and comfortable - a real' home from home'. Thank you so much!

Past Customer,

Past Customer,

A home away from home, great attention to detail with the children’s needs, high chair was up and ready at the table, night lights in the room. A cosy home that honestly was a wonderful base for the week. We will definitely be coming back next year!

Mrs R,

Excellent walk information especially appreciated. Bolton Castle stunning, Wensleydale Creamery fun and Aysgarth Falls beautiful - like all the fabulous views!

Ms Geraldine D,

Location

Askrigg
The small Wensleydale village of Askrigg is an idyllic location to enjoy a self-catering break. The sights of the Yorkshire Dales National Park surround you, with the bustling market towns of Hawes, Leyburn and Northallerton being just a short drive away where you'll find lovely independent shops, cafes and restaurants. The village is famous for being the setting of fictional Darrowby in tv's All Creatures Great and Small, though in the 18th century was hive of industry when it became a centre for the textiles and knitting trade. It is also thought that Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in Askrigg's Nappa Hall before being moved further down the dale to Castle Bolton. Today in the village you'll find three pubs, The Crown Inn (which dates back to 1850), The White Rose Hotel and the Kings Arms. The village also is home to some great tea rooms such as The Bakewell Cafe and The Corn Mill Tea Room (Bainbridge), a village bakery with a delicatessen, a village store and newsagents. In nearby Leyburn, you will find the Wensleydale Brewery & shop, which runs open days.
