Yorkshire Towns and Villages

As the UK’s biggest county, Yorkshire is full of charming towns and villages. Our Yorkshire holiday cottages are located across the region in some of these beautiful locations, from the wild North York Moors, to the rolling hills of the Dales, our rural holiday homes are hand-picked for their rarity and beauty both inside and out. Here are just a few of the gorgeous Yorkshire towns and villages where you can stay with Original Cottages.

Flower stand and chalboard menu at the Helmsley Walled Garden

Helmsley

Just outside York, this market town is in the North York Moors national park and is a great place to find nature and enjoy some fine dining and local businesses. Visit the Walled Garden here, which has been a staple of the town since 1759.  The garden’s five acres are overlooked by the ruins of Helmsley Castle and are full of botanical delights and there’s also a great cafe The Vine House Cafe here, as well as a shop selling plants, nature books and local preserves.

Malton

Malton

Home of the Malton Food Festival, Malton has lots of luxury places to eat and is the destination for foodies. The original home of Bluebird Bakery, which you can read more about in our Food and Drink guide, Matlock is nationally recognised as a place that celebrates good food. Lutt & Turner by YO Bakehouse is an artisan coffee shop and eatery serving delicious YO bakehouse cakes as well as a spectacular breakfast menu. In between tasty treats, head to Peagreen Pottery, a paint your own pot studio in Malton. They offer other craft sessions such as Silk screen printing and are open to children and adults for drop ins and birthday parties.

Stream at Thornton le Dale

Thornton le Dale

Another picturesque traditional village with nature at its heart- hedgehog homes, bug hotels and tree carvings of birds and pond life can be seen around the village. There are some gentle walks around the area including one that takes you up to the hamlet of Ellerburn, where there is a Saxon church and tearoom. We have a select few cottages in Thornton le Dale and, as the village is just a short drive from the coast, they may just be the perfect place for those looking to marry the rural and coastal on holiday.

View of a Church behind buildings and the river at Skipton

Skipton

Skipton is quintessentially Yorkshire: canal boats, a market square, cobbled streets, steam railway, lots of brilliant food, drink and music venues and who can forget the friendly faces? A great place for those looking to stay in West Yorkshire, Skipton straddles the line between town and country, being on the border of Wharfedale and the industrial centre of this glorious county. Check out our holiday cottages in Skipton today.

Haworth

As we mention in our historic guide, Haworth is probably best known as the birthplace of literary giants the Brontë sisters and the town still retains the nineteenth-century look that they would have been familiar with. The town’s main street is a steep cobbled hill lined with charity shops, antique shops, cafes, pubs and some truly quirky independent places. Haworth, like Skipton, also has a functioning steam train which travels along the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, a fun way to see Yorkshire for all the family.
