People here in Norfolk tend to be practical, proud of their roots and pleased to share this special place with our visitors. But be warned – there’s no patience for ‘rummuns’ around here (our word for a shady fellow). Here are my top tips for local pride and brilliant people you just have to drop in and see while you’re here.

My favourite places to go in Norfolk combine the wide-open space we have in abundance, with the secret pockets that pop up between the hustle and bustle of the city. We might be famous for dramatic flatlands stretching to the horizon, but this is a county of humble beauty, and sunsets like you’ve never seen before. Here are my top outdoor spots for all the family. 

I love Norfolk for its fascinating past. In prehistoric times it was connected to the continent over a now-submerged causeway called Doggerland. Norwich was second only to London in size and importance for hundreds of years and still has an otherworldly feel as you explore its bustling lanes of independent shops and archaeological treasures. Of course, it’s also the location of the royal Sandringham Estate and, as you’d expect, has its fair share of impressive country houses and hidden historical gems to discover for yourself.

Norfolk has long been a home for those who love the natural world. In the early 20th century, stretches of the county’s coastline and wetlands were among the first purchases by the founders of the National Trust and Wildlife Trust because of their environmental value and the amazing range of birds and animals they attract.

If you’d rather leave the walking boots at home, there is still plenty of exploring to be done across the Lakes on four wheels, two wheels or by boat. I’ve put together some of my favourite activities suitable for all that’ll get you out into the wonderful wilds without the need to pack the hiking poles.

Wherever you go in the Lake District, you’re practically guaranteed views that will knock your socks off and walks that will live long in the memory. Here are a few I’ve been walking with my friends and family whenever we get the chance – I hope one or two become your own firm favourites, too! Walking on waterfalls One of my most-loved walks takes in the mouth of the Langdales. Because we are based in Elterwater village, it’s one I can do with our dog Kota on sunny summer evenings after work – I’d love to share it with you, too!

Colourful creatures Although our corner of the country is best known for geology and natural history, there’s so much life here too. From protected nature reserves to special species popping up by well-worn paths and routes – it’s a haven for those who love the outdoors, both on two legs and four! I’d be delighted to show you around a few must-sees on our virtual journey. 

It’s not hard to see why people fall in love with the Lake District. We’re proud of the place we live, and we’re proud of our communities too. Many local residents work in the tourism industry and enjoy welcoming visitors, showing them around and helping them enjoy our beautiful National Park. Here, I’ll start by letting you in on some proud traditions and local secrets.

Every year, the Lake District becomes better and better when it comes to food and drink. You’ll find some of the country’s best breweries, cheesemakers, butchers, roasters and bakers.
